I just completed a number of site updates and new features for the No Place Like Home project that I’ve been working on for the past two years. In advance of the November 2018 election that includes pro-rent control Measure M in Santa Cruz, and statewide Proposition 10 for the repeal of Costa-Hawkins, the site now includes a Policy Tools section that includes context about these ballot measures and what kind of policy changes very municipalities are exploring to curb displacement and gentrification.
We’ve also updated the Resources with a map of the region to help residents locate a variety of social support services.
Various parts of the site include new interviews and oral histories that are used on the site to provide context on the issues, and also are available through the project’s Youtube channel.
Finally, I used a bit of my dissertation research to write a brief explainer on the market pressure placed on Santa Cruz by its proximity to Silicon Valley and the growing presence of the Tech community in town.
